What are WebP files?

WebP is a modern image format that provides superior lossless and lossy compression for images on the web. Using WebP, webmasters and web developers can create smaller, richer images that make the web faster.

A WEBP file is an image saved in the WebP (pronounced "Weppy") raster image format developed by Google for web graphics. The WebP format reduces file size more than standard JPEG compression while maintaining similar or better image quality.

Is WebP better than PNG?

WebP offers 26% smaller file sizes than PNG, while still providing transparency and the same quality. WebP loads faster (due to file size) than PNG images.

How do I open a WebP file?

You can open WebP files using browser like Google Chrome or graphics software, like GIMP, ImageMagick, or Microsoft Paint, which natively open WebP files by default. On Macos, Linux or Windows, right-click the image, point to “Open With,” then choose the program you want to edit with.

How do I save a WebP file as a PNG?

Google’s proprietary image format WEBP is arguably better than the standard JPG or PNG format. It creates much smaller file size than JPG and still supports transparency feature of PNG without much loss in quality. It is being used by many websites today, including IntCarShow, YouTube, Google Play Store, and Facebook Android app.

Is WebP an open source?

WebP is an Open Source image format developed at Google, which promises to generate images smaller in size compared to JPG and PNG formats, while generating better looking images. WebP supports transparency, like PNG and GIF images.

Can you convert WebP to JPG?

WebP is a relatively new image format with good compression and image quality, but is not yet supported by all web browsers and image viewers. ... All you need to do is upload your WebP file and click "Convert to JPG". Then you can download or further edit the produced JPG.

Convert WebP images to PNG

If you want to use a WebP image from your project for another purpose (for example, in a web page that needs to correctly display images in a browser without WebP support), you can use Android Studio to convert WebP images to PNG format. To convert a WebP image to PNG, proceed as follows:

  1. Right click on a WebP image in the Android Studio, then click Convert to PNG.
  2. A dialog appears, asking if you would like to convert the image to PNG, deleting the original WebP file, or keep the original WebP file as well as the new PNG file. Click Yes to delete the original WebP file, or No to retain the WebP file in addition to the PNG file. Your image is converted immediately.
